Where the wild things are, 괴물들이 사는 나라 해석 및 영상 정리

 

 

 

한글 버전으로 자연스럽게 의역된 책도 존재하는 모리스 샌닥의 작품

처음에 그림을 보고는 그렇게 와닿지 않았는데, 찬찬히 읽어보니 아이의 상상이 가미된 이야기가 꽤 재미있었다.

엄마한테 혼나고 방에서 상상의 나래를 펼치는 아이~^^ 

 

where the wild things are, 괴물들이 사는 나라 원어와 한글책 둘 다 있으니 함께 보면 내용을 이해하는데 도움이 될 것 같다.

The night Max wore his wolf suit and made mischief of one kind
그날밤에 맥스는 늑대 옷을 입고 이런 장난을 했지

*mischief: 짖궂게 놀리거나 재미로 하는 짓, 어린아이들이 하는 못된 짓

and another
이런 장난도 했고

his mother called him "WILD THING!"
and Max said "I’LL EAT YOU UP!"
so he was sent to bed without eating anything.

그의 엄마는 말했어 “이 괴물 딱지 같은 녀석!”
그리고 맥스는 "엄마를 잡아먹어버릴거야!"라고 말했어.
그래서 맥스는 아무것도 먹지 못하고 침대로 보내졌어.

That very night in Max's room a forest grew
그날 밤 맥스의 방에서 숲이 자라났어

and grewㅡ
그리고 자꾸자꾸 자라났어

and grew until his ceiling hung with vines
and the walls became the world all around
​그리고 그의 천장에 덩굴이 매달릴 때까지 자라났어, 그리고 벽은 온 세상이 되었어.

and an ocean tumbled by with a private boat for Max
and he sailed off through night and day
바다는 맥스호와 함께 일렁거렸어
그리고 맥스는 밤새 항해했지

*tumble: 굴러 떨어지다[떨어지게 하다](보통 심한 부상을 입지는 않음)
If someone or something tumbles somewhere, they fall there with a rolling or bouncing movement.
누군가, 무언가 tumbles somewhere 이라고 하면
크게 굴러서 떨어지기나 통통 튀는 움직임을 말하는 것이다.

*private: 개인소유의, 전용의

and in and out of weeks and almost over a year to where the wild things are.
몇 주 동안, 그리고 거의 일 년 넘게 괴물들이 있는 곳까지.

*in and out(of something): (어떤 곳을) 들락거리는, 들랑날랑, 출몰

And when he came to the place where the wild things are
they roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws
​그리고 맥스가 괴물나라에 왔을 때
그들의 무서운 소리로 으르렁대고, 
무서운 이빨을 우드득 갈고,
끔찍한 눈을 굴리고 
끔찍한 발톱을 세워 보였어.

*gnash: 이를갈다
*claw: 발톱

till Max said "BE STILL!"
맥스가 "가만히 있어!"라고 말할 때까지

and tamed them with the magic trick of staring into all their yellow eyes without blinking once 
그리고 눈을 한 번 깜박이지 않고 노란 눈을 모두 응시하는 마술로 그들을 길들였다.

*tame: 길들여진, 길들이다, 다스리다
*stare into: ~을 응시하다
*blink: 눈을 깜빡이다

and they were frightened and called him the most wild thing of all
그리고 괴물들은 겁을 먹고 맥스를 괴물중의 괴물이라고 불렀어.

*frighten: 겁먹게 만들다

and made him king of all wild things.
그리고 맥스를 괴물들의 왕으로 삼았어.

"And now," cried Max, " let the wild rumpus start!"
"그리고 이제," 맥스가 소리쳤어, “이제 괴물 소동을 벌이자!”

*rumpus: 불평, 소동

"Now stop!" Max said and sent the wild things off to bed without their supper. And Max the king of all wild things was lonely and wanted to be where someone loved him best of all.
"이제 그만해!" 맥스가 말하고 괴물들을 저녁도 먹이지 않고 잠자리로 쫒아 보냈어. 그리고 괴물의 왕 맥스는 외로웠고 무엇보다도 누군가 그를 가장 사랑하는 곳에 있기를 원했어.

*supper: 저녁

Then all around from far away across the world he smelled good things to eat so he gave up being king of where the wild things are.
그리고 멀리 떨어진 세계 저편에서 그는 맛있는 냄새를 맡았어. 그래서 그는 괴물들의 왕이 되는 것을 포기하기로 했어.

*across the world: 온세계에

But the wild things cried, "Oh please don't goㅡ
we'll eat you upㅡwe love you so!
And Max said, "No!"
하지만 괴물들은 울면서, “오, 제발 가지 마."
가면 잡아먹을 거야. 우리는 너를 정말 사랑해!
그리고 맥스는 "싫어!”라고 말했어.

The wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth
and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws
but Max stepped into his private boat and waved good-bye
​괴물들은 무서운 소리로 으르렁대고, 무서운 이빨을 우드득 갈고, 끔찍한 눈을 굴리고 끔찍한 발톱을 세워 보였어.
하지만 맥스는 보트를 타고 손을 흔들어 작별인사를 했지.

and sailed back over a year
and in and out of weeks
and through a day
​그리고 1년 넘게 항해를 했어.
그리고 몇 주 동안
그리고 하루 종일


and into the night of his very own room
where he found his supper waiting for him
​그날 밤에 맥스는 제 방으로 돌아왔어
저녁밥이 그를 기다리고 있었지

and it was still hot.
​저녁밥은 아직도 따뜻했어.
