A mouse took a stroll through the deep dark wood.
A fox saw the mouse and the mouse looked good.
"Where are you going to, little brown mouse?
Come and have lunch in my underground house."
"It's terribly kind of you, Fox, but no ㅡ
I'm going to have lunch with a griffalo."
쥐 한 마리가 깊고 어두운 숲 속을 산책했어요.
여우 한마리가 그 쥐를 보았고 그 쥐는 맛있어 보였어요.
어디 가니! 작은 갈색쥐야?
나의 땅속 집에 가서 점심 먹자!
엄청 친절하구나 여우야, 하지만 안돼
나는 그루팔로랑 점심먹을거야.

 

*terribly: 너무, 대단히, 몹시, 극심하게, 지독히

"A gruffalo? What's a gruffalo?
"A gruffalo! Why, didn't you know?
그루팔로? 그루팔로가 누군데?
그루팔로! 그루팔로 몰라?

"He has terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws."
"그는 끔찍한 상아,  무시무시한 발톱, 그리고 그의 턱에 무서운 이빨을 가지고 있어.”

*terrible: 끔찍한, 소름 끼치는, 심한, 지독한, 기분[몸]이 안 좋은
*tusk: (코끼리의) 엄니, 상아
*jaw: 턱

"Where are you meeting him?"
"Here, by these rocks, and his favourite food is roasted fox."
어디서 그를 만나?
여기 이 바위 앞에서, 그리고 그의 가장 좋아하는 음식은 구운 여우야.

*roast: 굽다, 굽히다, 구운 고기, 고기 요리

"Roasted fox! I'm off!" Fox said.
"Goodbye little mouse," and away he sped.
구운 여우!? 나갈게! 여우가 말했어

"잘있어 작은 쥐야" 그리고 여우는 빠르게 도망갔어.

"Silly old Fox! Doesn't he know, There's no such thing as a gruffalo?"
어리석은 늙은 여우! 그는 몰르나? 그루팔로 같은 것은 없다는 걸?

On went the mouse through the deep dark wood.
An owl saw the mouse and the mouse looked good.
"Where are you going to, little brown mouse?
Come and have tea in my treetop house."
"It's frightfully nice of you, Owl, but no ㅡ
I'm going to have tea with a gruffalo."
쥐는 깊고 어두운 숲속을 계속 나아갔어요.
올빼미 한마리가 그 쥐를 보았죠. 그리고 그 쥐는 맛있어 보였어요.
"어디 가고 있니? 작은 갈색 쥐야?
나의 나무 꼭대기 집에 와서 점심 먹자"
"몹시 친절하구나. 올빼미야 하지만 안돼
난 그루팔로와 차를 마실거거든 "

 

*frightfully: 몹시, 대단히, 끔찍한, 무서운

"A gruffalo? What's a gruffalo?
"A gruffalo! Why, didn't you know?
그루팔로? 그루팔로가 뭐야?
그루팔로! 넌 왜 그것을 모르지?

"He has knobbly knees, and turned-out toes, and a poisonous wart at the end of his nose."
"그는 혹이 많은 무릎과 튀어나온 발가락 그리고 그의 코 끝에 독사마귀를 가지고 있지."

* knobbly: 혹이 많은, 울퉁불퉁한

* toes: 발가락
* poisonous: 유독한, 독이 있는
* wart: (피부에 생기는) 무사마귀

"Where are you meeting him?"
"Here, by this stream, and his favorite food is owl ice cream."
어디서 그를 만나기로 했어?
"여기 개울가 옆에서 그리고 그의 가장 좋아하는 음식은 올빼미 아이스크림이야." 

 

*stream: 개울, 시내

"Owl ice cream? Toowhit toowhoo!
Goodbye, little mouse," and away Owl flew.
"올빼미 아이스크림이라고? 트윗 트후
"잘 가 작은 쥐야, " 올빼미는 날아가 버렸어요.

"Silly old Owl! Doesn't he know, There's no such thing as a gruffalo?"
"어리석은 올빼미 그루팔로 같은 그런 동물은 없다는 걸 모르나?"

On went the mouse through the deep dark wood.
An snake saw the mouse and the mouse looked good.
"Where are you going to, little brown mouse?
Come for a feast in my logpile house."
"It's wonderfully good of you, Snake, but no ㅡ
I'm having a feast with a gruffalo."
쥐는 깊고 어두운 숲을 계속 나아갔어요.
뱀이 그 쥐를 보았죠. 그리고 쥐는 맛있어 보였어요.
"어디 가고 있니? 작은 갈색 쥐야?"
나의 통나무 말뚝 집에 가서 파티하자!
"정말 좋겠다 뱀아 하지만 안돼
난 그루팔로와 만찬을 즐길 거야" 

*feast: 연회, 잔치
*log pile: 나무말뚝

"A gruffalo? What's a gruffalo?
"A gruffalo! Why, didn't you know?
그루팔로? 그루팔로가 누군데?
그루팔로! 왜 너는 모르지?

"His eyes are orange, his tongue is black; he has purble prickles all over his back."
"그의 눈은 오렌지색이고, 그의 혀는 검정; 그는 등에 보라색 가시를 가지고 있지" 

*prickles:  깔끄럽다[까칠거리다], (식물의 잎 일부 동물의 피부에 있는 작은) 가시


"Where are you meeting him?"
"Here, by this lake, And his favorite food is scrambled snake."
"어디서 그를 만날거니? "
"여기, 이 호수 옆에서, 그리고 그의 가장 좋아하는 음식은 뱀 스크램블이야" 

"Scrambled snake! It's time I hid! Goodbye, little mouse, " and away Snake slid.
"뱀 스크램블! 내가 숨을 시간이군! 잘 가, 작은 쥐야" 뱀은 미끄러져 가버렸어요.

"Silly old Snake! Doesn't he know, There's no such thing as a gruffalo. . .
어리석은 늙은 뱀, 그루팔로같은 것은 없다는 것을 그는 모르나?

... Oh!"
오...!

But who is this creature with terrible claws And terrible teeth in his terrible jaws?
그런데 이 끔찍한 발톱과 끔찍한 턱 안에 끔찍한 이를 가지고 있는 이 동물은 누구일까요?

*creature: 생명이 있는 존재, 생물, 사람

He has knobbly knees and turned-out toes And a poisonous wart at the end of his nose.
His eyes are orange, his tongue is black;
He has purple prickles all over his back.
그는 혹이 많은 무릎과 솟아 나온 발가락, 그리고 그의 코 끝에 독이 있는 사마귀를 가지고 있어요.
그의 눈은 오렌지색, 그의 혀는 검정;
그는 그의 등에 보라색 가시를 갖고 있어요.

 

* knobbly: 혹이 많은, 울퉁불퉁한

* toes: 발가락
* poisonous: 유독한, 독이 있는 
* wart: (피부에 생기는) 무사마귀 

"Oh help! Oh no!
It's a gruffalo!"
오 도와줘 오 안돼
그루팔로에요!

"My favorite food!" the Gruffalo said.
"You'll taste good on a slice of bread!"
나의 가장 좋아하는 음식! 그루팔로가 말했어요.
"넌 빵 위에서 아주 맛있겠다." 

"Good?" said the mouse. "Don't call me good!
I'm the scariest creature in this wood.
Just walk behind me and soon you'll see, Everyone is afraid of me."
"맛있겠다고요?" 쥐가 말했어요. "나를 맛있다고 말하지 마요
난 이 숲에서 가장 무서운 동물이에요
내 뒤를 따라와요 그러면 모두가 나를 무서워하게 되는 것을 보게 될 거예요."

 

*scariest: 무서운, 겁나는

"All right," said the Gruffalo,bursting with laughter.
"You go ahead and I'll follow after."
“좋아” 그루팔로가 웃음을 터뜨리며 말했어요.
네가 먼저 가렴, 내가 뒤따를 테니

 

*bursting with laughter: 갑자기 웃어댔다.

They walked and walked till the Gruffalo said,
"I hear a hiss in the leaves ahead."
그들은 그루팔로가 말할때까지 계속 걷고 걷고 걸었어요.
"앞에 나뭇잎 속에서 쉭쉭 소리가 들린다."

"It's Snake," said the mouse. "Why, Snake, hello!"
Snake took one look at the Gruffalo.
"Oh crumbs!" he said, "Goodbye, little mouse,"
And off he slid to his logpile house.
"뱀이에요." 쥐가 말했어요. “아니, 뱀 안녕”
뱀은 그루팔로를 한 번 보았어요.
“아이쿠” 그가 말했어요. “잘 가, 작은 쥐야”
그리고는 그의 통나무 말뚝집으로 미끄러져 가버렸어요.

 

*crumbs: 어이쿠, 저런

*slide: 미끄러지다, 미끄러뜨리다

"You see?" said the mouse. "I told you so."
"Amazing!" said the Gruffalo.
“봤지요?” 쥐가 말했어요. “내가 그렇다고 말했잖아요” 
“놀랍네” 그루팔로가 말했어요.

They walked some more till the Gruffalo said,
"I hear a hoot in the trees ahead."
그들은 그루팔로가 말할때까지 좀 더 걸었어요.
“앞에 나무 속에서 훝 소리가 들려”

"It's Owl," said the mouse. "Why, Owl, hello!"
Owl took one look at the Gruffalo.
"Oh dear! he said, "Goodbye, little mouse, "
And off he flew to his treetop house. 
“올빼미에요” 쥐가 말했어요. “아니, 올빼미 안녕!”
올빼미는 그루팔로를 보았어요.
“오 세상에” 그는 말했어요. “잘 가, 작은 쥐야”
그리고는 나무꼭대기 집으로 날아가버렸어요.

"You see?" said the mouse. "I told you so."
"Astounding!" said the Gruffalo.
“봤지요?” 쥐가 말했어요. “내가 그렇다고 말했잖아요."
“놀랍군” 그루팔로가 말했어요.

 

*Astounding: 경악스러운, 믿기 어려운

They walked some more till the Gruffalo said,
"I can hear feet on the path ahead."
그들은 그루팔로가 말할 때까지 좀 더 걸었어요.
"난 앞에 오솔길에서 발소리가 들려"

 

*path: 길, 오솔길

"It's Fox," said the mouse. "Why, Fox, hello!"
Fox took one look at the Gruffalo.
"Oh help!" he said, "Goodbye, little mouse, "
and off he ran to his underground house.
“여우에요” 쥐가 말했어요. “아니, 여우 안녕!”
여우가 그루팔로를 보았어요.
“오 도와줘” 그는 말했어요. “잘 가 작은 쥐야”
그리고는 그의 땅속집으로 달아나 버렸어요.

"Well, Gruffalo," said the mouse. "You see? Everyone is afraid of me!
But now my tummy's beginning to rumble.
My favorite food is ㅡ gruffalo crumble!"
“자, 그루팔로” 쥐가 말했어요 “봤지요! 모두가 나를 무서워한다고요. 
하지만 나의 배는 지금 꼬르륵 거리고 있어요. 
나의 가장 좋아하는 음식은 그루팔로 크럼블!”

 

* tummy: 배

* rumble: 우르르[우르릉/웅웅]거리는 소리를 내다, (뱃속에서) 꾸르륵 소리나다

"Gruffalo crumble!" the Gruffalo said,
 And quick as the wind he turned and fled.
“그루팔로 크럼블” 그루팔로가 말했어요.
그리고는 그는 뒤돌아서서 바람처럼 빠르게 달아나 버렸어요.

 

* fled: flee의 과거, 과거분사
* flee: 달아나다, 도망하다

All was quiet in the deep dark wood.
The mouse found a nut and the nut was good.
깊고 어두운 숲속에 모든 것은 고요했어요.
쥐는 너트를 하나 발견했어요. 그리고 그 너트는 맛이 좋았어요.
